Black pepper is produced from the unripe berries of the pepper plant.
The berries are cooked briefly in hot water and then dried for
several days. Once dried, the fruits are called black peppercorns.

Dried, ground pepper is one of the most common spices used in
European cuisine and is found on nearly every dinner table the
world over.

Pepper gets its spicy heat from the piperine compound found both in
the outer fruit and in the seed. Sri Lankan black pepper is prized for
its high piperine content.
